What we calculate, where the factors come from, and where an estimate stops being useful.

Course types

The course is the length of the pool. The event distance is the total distance swum. For example, a 100 yd event in a 25 yd pool is four lengths.

Different pool lengths change the number of turns. Yard and meter events may also cover different physical distances. A course conversion estimates a corresponding event time; it is more than a unit conversion.

The conversion model

We use the SportsEngine course conversion rules for USA Swimming teams, described in How to perform course conversion factoring of times ↗.

Selected medley, long freestyle and meter-course rules were also checked against the historical Western Zone Policies and Procedures, pages 10–11 ↗. This is the 2016-named archive with the conversion pages marked amended September 2014, not a claim about current meet rules.

Supported calculations were cross-checked against an independent implementation. “Checked” describes our coefficient verification; it does not establish prediction accuracy or certification by a swimming organization.

One model is used throughout this calculator. We do not mix historical NCAA factors or other models into unavailable conversions.

The formulas

In the table below, h is the input time in hundredths of a second (hsecs), F is the event factor, and I is the event increment in hsecs. One second equals 100 hsecs.

These operations apply only to supported event directions. Each result shows the actual factor, increment and calculation. A general formula does not make an unverified event available.

Same-distance events

For supported same-number-distance SCY → LCM events, F is 1.11. The increment for each 50 of event distance is 0.80 s for Freestyle, 0.60 s for Backstroke, 1.00 s for Breaststroke, 0.70 s for Butterfly, and 0.80 s for Individual Medley.

For example, 200 IM uses I = 320 hsecs (3.20 s); 400 IM uses I = 640 hsecs (6.40 s). A 400 yd IM time of 4:10.00 in SCY becomes an estimated 4:43.90 for 400 m IM in LCM:

250.00 s × 1.11 + 6.40 s = 283.90 s

For the reverse direction, subtract the increment before dividing. A 200 m IM time of 2:00.00 in LCM gives (120.00 s − 3.20 s) ÷ 1.11 ≈ 105.23 s, or 1:45.23 for 200 yd IM in SCY.

Supported SCY–SCM same-distance conversions use F = 1.11 and I = 0. LCM–SCM conversions use F = 1, with the event increment added toward LCM or subtracted toward SCM.

Why can calculators give different times?

Check the source course, target event and model first. For 100 yd Freestyle in SCY at 1:00.00, this model gives 60.00 × 1.11 + 1.60 = 68.20 seconds for LCM. Multiplying by 1.11 alone gives 66.60 seconds, which is this model’s SCM result. A model or increment mismatch can therefore change the answer even when the entered time is identical.

Matching one example does not establish that two calculators use identical rules for every event. Compare their event-specific formulas and rounding policies.

Long freestyle events

For SCY–LCM, the model pairs 500 yd ↔ 400 m and 1000 yd ↔ 800 m with F = 0.8925 and I = 0. The 1650 yd ↔ 1500 m pair uses F = 1.02 and I = 0.

SCM–LCM long freestyle keeps the distance in meters and uses increments of 6.40 s for 400 m, 12.80 s for 800 m and 24.00 s for 1500 m. Long freestyle SCY–SCM directions remain unavailable.

Supported events

The selection set contains 53 source events, each with two other target courses: 106 directions in total. Of these, 96 have checked coefficients, 8 await verification, and 2 have no target event. These counts describe directions, not 96 different races.

Listing a source event does not mean both target directions are verified. The exceptions are below. Relays, nonstandard pool lengths and same-course identity conversions are outside this calculator’s scope.

Unavailable conversions

Long freestyle between SCY and SCM

Six directions remain unverified: both directions of 500 yd ↔ 400 m, 1000 yd ↔ 800 m, and 1650 yd ↔ 1500 m. The source’s general-case wording conflicts with an independently implemented long-distance rule. We do not choose a candidate factor just to fill the gap.

The corresponding SCY–LCM and SCM–LCM calculations remain available. For example, 500 yd Freestyle in SCY can produce an LCM 400 m estimate while its SCM target is unavailable.

100 IM between SCY and SCM

These two directions have not been independently verified at the event level. We do not extend a general factor and label it checked.

100 IM to LCM

LCM 100 IM is not in this calculator’s event set. SCY or SCM 100 IM therefore has no LCM result. This is a boundary of the event set, not a statement about what can physically be swum in a pool.

Unavailable targets show an explanation instead of a number. They do not prevent another supported target from calculating.

Rounding and input precision

Inputs accept up to two decimal places and are parsed as integer hundredths. Coefficients keep their exact decimal values. Intermediate calculations are not rounded.

We round the final result to the nearest hundredth of a second, with half a hundredth rounding up. For example, 59.995 seconds displays as 1:00.00. A formula uses ≈ when its exact result needs rounding.

This is SwimTimeCalc’s display policy. The SportsEngine source does not specify this rounding rule. We do not apply the truncation policy from a historical NCAA table.

Displayed times use accumulated minutes: 1:10:03 is shown as 70:03.00. Input times must be from 0.01 seconds to 23:59:59.99; this is a software input limit, not a judgment about athletic performance.

Rounding an estimate and entering it for a reverse conversion can introduce a hundredth-second difference. A negative result or a result that rounds to zero is not displayed as a valid time.

Pace and total swim time

The Pace Calculator uses only distance and time:

Average seconds per 100 = total seconds ÷ (total distance ÷ 100)

For 1000 yd in 12:33.00, the calculation is 753.00 ÷ 10 = 75.30 seconds, or 1:15.30 per 100 yd. For 750 m in 15:00.00, the average is 2:00.00 per 100 m.

From pace to total time

Choose Total time to reverse the calculation:

Total seconds = seconds per 100 × (total distance ÷ 100)

At 1:40.00 per 100 m, 1500 m takes 100 × 15 = 1500 seconds, or 25:00.00. This assumes a constant pace and adds no rest. Switching modes preserves your input for each mode within the current page; when a mode is empty, the previous result may fill it.

Use the time spent swimming the selected distance. Exclude rest between separate repeats. For a continuously timed swim or race, use its recorded elapsed time, including pauses within that effort. The tool cannot identify and subtract rest for you.

A send-off interval includes swimming plus the rest before another repeat. Swimming 100 in 1:45 with 15 seconds of rest gives a 2:00 interval, while the swim pace is 1:45 per 100. See the US Masters Swimming pace chart explanation ↗.

Any positive distance from 0.01 to 100,000 is accepted, with up to two decimal places. Switching yards and meters changes what the number means; it does not convert the number. No course conversion factors are used for pace.

If you enter a goal time, the result is the average pace required for that goal. It is not a training prescription or an estimate of your fastest 100.

What these estimates cannot tell you

Actual performance depends on individual turns, starts, technique, conditions and the specific race. This model is not personalized, and we do not have a validated error range for an individual swimmer.

SwimTimeCalc is not certified by USA Swimming or the NCAA and does not guarantee meet entry or qualification. Meet rules can specify a different model, direction, season, rounding policy or eligible time. Always consult the meet’s current requirements.

The NCAA’s 2026–27 Division I qualifying standards ↗ describe a separate, season-specific process. Our calculator is not an implementation of that process.

SwimTimeCalc is an independent swimming calculator. We maintain the calculation code, check the cited coefficients and document unavailable directions. We are not affiliated with SportsEngine, USA Swimming or the NCAA.

Recent changes

September 10, 2026: added pace-to-total-time calculation, common distances, result copying and reuse; improved mobile input layout and loading behavior. Conversion coefficients are unchanged from the September 8 check.

Privacy and your choices

Calculations run in your browser. Our product code does not upload your swim times, distances or result values, and does not save them in cookies, browser storage, URLs or a personal history. Form values remain in the current page’s memory while you use it. Resetting clears the form. Your browser may independently cache pages or restore form fields.

Hosting still involves ordinary web requests and may process connection information such as IP addresses and requested paths. When optional Google Analytics is configured, it runs only after you allow it. It measures page views and a small set of tool actions, including successful calculations and requests for unavailable events.

Analytics parameters are limited to categories such as tool, course, stroke, event distance, result count, and coarse pace-distance ranges. We do not send entered times, result numbers, custom distances or free text. Page addresses sent to analytics exclude query strings and fragments.

Optional analytics is off until configured and allowed. Calculations work without it.

Your analytics choice, if offered, may be saved in browser storage so it can be respected on later pages. This stores a preference, not a swimming record. Declining or blocking analytics does not restrict either calculator.
